Liberties Press are delighted to announce the publication of Eileen Battersby’s Second Readings – From Beckett to Black Beauty. With an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Richard Ford, and featuring 52 classic novels – one for each week of the year – plus an extensive essay by Eileen on why stories matter, there is guaranteed to be something for every fan of literature.
About the Book: Why do we read? Why do we re-read? Why do some novels live in the imagination and summon us back time and again? How do Wuthering Heights, The Lord of the Rings and Black Beauty continue to wield their spells? These are among some of the questions that shape the journeys undertaken in Second Readings.
From America to Ireland; Russia to Brazil; Germany to South Africa, Second Readings is a celebration of reading and breathes new life into well-known and long-forgotten novels. Isn’t there a book you always go back to, or one that you always meant to read but have not got around to yet?
There are some surprising choices: Orwell’s Coming Up For Air features, instead of 1984 or Animal Farm; or The Lord of the Rings but not Finnegan’s Wake – although Ulysses is there. Yet this is literary appreciation without an agenda. And while there may be no Henry James, no Victor Hugo, no Flann O’Brien it is only a question of capacity as opposed to criticism. Certainly, there will many discussions prompted by the variety and breadth of what has been included and there is plenty to attract the widest range of readers, with The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne; All Quiet on the Western Front; Wuthering Heights; A Confederacy of Dunces; The Great Gatsby; and The Picture of Dorian Gray among the 52 selections.
About the Author: Born in California, Eileen Battersby discovered reading at an early age. While completing post-graduate work, she began writing book reviews and covering sports. An Irish Times staff arts journalist, she is also the paper’s Literary Correspondent and has written on all aspects of the arts including classical music, the visual arts and theatre as well as history, archaeology, architectural history, and horses. Four-time winner of the National Arts Journalist of the Year award, she lives in the country with her daughter, Nadia, and their horses, dogs and cats. Her ambition is to breed and/or produce an Olympic showjumper.

Just back from a long trip to Shanghai for the opening of the Shanghai World Expo 2010. I have to say, having been working on or around the Expo for the last 18 months I should have known what was coming but nothing prepares you for the scale and ambition of this Expo – its a must see for anyone interested in doing business in China – particularly if you are interested in tackling the Chinese market.
Of course I have to start with the Irish Pavilion which, with one of the lowest budgets of the exhibitors in Area C makes a very impressive statement at Expo on our behalf. It manages to strike a balance between “modern” Ireland , our traditional cultures and the essential character of our people. I loved it – click here for more information.
The UK Pavilion is very different to the Irish pavilion (the almost 200 national pavilions are all very varied) and its absolutely beautiful. There are all sorts of messages and meanings hidden in the architectural design that I probably missed but no doubt it has struck a chord with the Chinese visitors, further reinforcing the image of the UK as a dependable innovator and leader.
The Expo site is on both sides of the Huangpu river, the national pavilions (above) are all on the Pudong side and its that side that is drawing the majority of visitors.
On the Puxi side you have some of the theme pavilions (Future Pavilion, Urban Footprint..), the corporate pavilions (GM, Coca Cola, Vanke..) and the Urban Planning Best Practices area.
I spent a day at the pavilions on Puxi with very little queuing – well worth a visit especially if crowds dont appeal.
May and October are the best times, weather wise, to visit Shanghai but with May almost over don’t wait till October as that is definitely going to be the busiest month at Expo as it closes October 31st, after which all but the China Pavilion & Expo Performance Centre will be dismantled.
Find more information about attending Expo here.
Ireland’s national day is on the 17th June and there are various business trips from Ireland planned for that week, aswell as a presidential visit, so a good networking opportunity too – contact us for more details.
You can buy a ticket when you get to Shanghai – you definitely need to spend at least two days at Expo. Of course, as for any trip to China, you’ll need to arrange visa before you travel.
With teams in Dublin and Shanghai, we help great Irish businesses do great business in China.

Watching Munster Leinster games long before he was involved himself gives David Wallace a special appreciation of these occasions.
“They were always big games” he told journalists in UL during the week. ” I remember going to watch them when my brothers were playing. They were always typical derby games. No quarter asked for or given. Not much has changed really.” he believes.
“Well maybe the amount of support and hype around it has, but on the pitch, not a lot has changed.”
Reminded that Leinster have won the last three encounters he’s asked if that acts as an incentive. ” Getting to a final, that’s an incentive. Look, there’s no escaping the past results. But our focus has to be on our jobs as players, being professional. And that’s the way we’re going to approach it. These derby games are always competitive, always hard fought and this one isn’t going to be any different.”
“There’s a prize of a final place for the winning team at the end of it and that motivates teams even more so. Of course its going to be a big day. Yes we want to get to a final and we have to win to do that. So that’s a huge incentive for us.”
The challenge that Munster and indeed Leinster faced in recent weeks was picking themselves up after the disappointment in Europe? “There’s no denying it’s difficult when you lose in the latter stages of a competition like the Heineken Cup. And mentally it definitely takes its toll.” he admits.
“For me, fortunately maybe, it was the 24 hours after that game that was the hardest and then for some strange reason I wanted to get back out there and play again. Maybe try right some wrongs from the week before. Couldn’t wait to get back out and play (against Cardiff).”
“You just have to re-focus. Set your sights on what’s achievable and forget what ’s gone in the past because at that stage it doesn’t matter. We had a focus of getting through to a final and we achieved that.”
“Last week, although it was disappointing to lose, it felt like a bit of a victory. Because obviously we’d qualified for a semi-final so that’s why it felt that way. Just the way the game went for ourselves, our attitude and the intensity we brought, made it feel like a bit of a bounce back.”
“Now though,” he concludes, “we have to re-focus. Now there’s a final to get to. What’s gone before, doesn’t matter. It’s all about 80+ minutes on Saturday night.”

Anthony Foley makes seven changes, three of those positional, from the side that accounted for Ulster in the semi-final, for Sunday’s British & Irish Cup Final against Cornish Pirates at The Recreation Ground in Cambourne.
Tom Gleeson, Simon Zebo and Billy Holland, who were involved in the Magners League game that day against Ospreys return to the side while tight head prop Dave Ryan will be on duty in the RDS on Saturday night.
The experienced Holland’s inclusion means Tommy O’Donnell moves to his favoured number six berth in place of Eoghan Grace while Dave Kilcoyne comes into the front row for Ryan.
In the backs, Gleeson slots into the outside centre alongside two try scorer from the semi Jeremy Manning with Barnes moving to the right wing, Zebo returns to the left which means Sean Scanlon moves to full-back in place of Mossie Lawlor who is named on the bench.
Cornish Pirates reached the final with victories in the Pool stages over Gael Force (Scotland), Plymouth Albion, Exeter Chiefs and Newport. Their only defeat in that phase came away to Leinster and they recorded a facile 43-5 semi final win over Doncaster Knights in Camborne.
Munster: Sean Scanlon; Danny Barnes, Tom Gleeson, Jeremy Manning, Simon Zebo; Declan Cusack, Duncan Williams; Dave Kilcoyne, Mike Sherry, Stephen Archer; Dave Foley, Ian Nagle; Billy Holland, Tommy O’Donnell, Peter O’Mahony capt.
Replacements: Sean Henry, AN Other, Dave O’Callaghan, Paddy Butler, Conor Murray, Mossie Lawlor, Ronan O’Mahony.

Doug Howlett and Keith Earls return to Munster action as does Jerry Flannery, John Hayes and Mick O’Driscoll for the Magners League semi-final clash with Leinster at the RDS tomorrow night (8pm).
Howlett’s been out of action since the Northampton quarter final game while Earls, Flannery and O’Driscoll missed last week’s trip to Cardiff through injury when Hayes was given a well earned rest.
Earls’ return means Lifeimi Mafi switches to the left wing while Denis Hurley makes way for Howlett on the right.
Up front Damien Varley continues at hooker as Jerry Flannery returns from injury and the inclusion of Niall Ronan and Nick Williams at seven and eight respectively provides Munster withe strong impact from the bench in the shape of James Coughlan and David Wallace should the need arise.
Munster: P Warwick; D Howlett, K Earls, J de Villiers, L Mafi; R O’Gara, T O’Leary; M Horan, D Varley, J Hayes; D O’Callaghan, M O’Driscoll; A Quinlan, N Ronan, N Williams. Replacements: J Flannery, D Ryan, J Coughlan, D Wallace, P Stringer, D Hurley, S Deasy.

Mary Hanafin TD, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport launches ‘Catch up on Culture Week’ in Number Twenty Nine, Dublin’s Georgian House Museum.
‘Catch up on Culture Week 2010: 15-22 May’ is an initiative of the Irish Museums Association in association with Temple Bar Cultural Trust to attract new visitors to our superb cultural heritage sites. Held between 15 and 22 May, ‘Catch up on Culture Week’ will gain new audiences, provide free and enjoyable experiences, and encourage our visitors to use our museums and cultural organisations more frequently.
Mary Hanafin T.D., Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport said: “Museums, galleries and historic houses form an integral part of Irish life. In its second year, ‘Catch up on Culture Week’ provides a wonderful opportunity for these cultural organisations to collectively promote themselves and their events and to encourage more visitors to experience the wealth of our collections and exhibits. Initiatives such as ‘Catch up on Culture Week’, promoted by the Irish Museums Association in association with Temple Bar Cultural Trust, seek to further enhance and develop our cultural tourism product”.
Paul Doyle, Chairman of the Irish Museums Association said “The Irish Museums Association along with Temple Bar Cultural Trust is pleased to promote ‘Catch up on Culture Week’, which is supported by over forty four organisations. It gives these organisations the opportunity to promote their events and venues in a cohesive manner”. He added “I hope that this second year of Catch up on Culture Week will expand and grow over the coming years”.
Padraig McManus, ESB Chief Executive, hosting the ‘Catch up on Culture Week’ launch at ESB’s Number Twenty Nine said that culture and the arts are only worthy when they are accessible to everybody. “We at ESB, through our sponsorships endeavour to make this possible by supporting initiatives like this. We are pleased to be part of Catch up on Culture Week 2010 and we hope everybody has access to and enjoys the week’s activities and workshops”.
The Irish Museums Association in association with Temple Bar Cultural Trust is promoting the week in conjunction with participating cultural sites, all listed on the IMA website. Arts centres, museums, historic houses, galleries, folk parks, libraries etc., will be pro-active in organising and advertising events this week to attract the local community.
Notes to Editors:

The Irish Museums Association is supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport and The Heritage Council.
2. From Saturday 15 to Saturday 22 May (including European Museums at Night 15 May and International Museums Day on 18 May) a wide variety of displays and events will be held throughout the country at museums, folk parks, historic houses, galleries, arts centres etc – to attract the public. A full listing of over ninety events can be found at http://www.irishmuseums.org/catch-up-on-culture-week/ .

4. ‘Catch up on Culture Week’ is followed later in the summer by Heritage Week (co-ordinated by The Heritage Council) and Culture Night on 24 September (organised by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and other key partners).

No longer just another blunt object, Black Cobra’s music is now a razor-sharp weapon and a true force to be reckoned with. Produced by Billy Anderson (Melvins, Neurosis, Sleep and High On Fire), Chronomega is one of the heaviest records of last year, or for that matter, any year! It is a raging slab of pure unadulterated heaviness and they are bringing it to the UK and Europe in June.
Weedeater will be playing as part of this dual headlining beast of a tour…this will be their first visit to the UK in two years, and their first tour since Dixie Dave shot his toe off (they are calling it the 9 toe tour for that very reason)
Here are the dates:
14 Jun UK Plymouth White Rabbit
15 Jun UK Leeds The Well
17 Jun UK London Underworld

Gallery Zozimus, Francis St., Dublin
Opens at 6.00 pm SHARP on Wednesday, May 5th.
The exhibition will be opened by Ryan Tubridy.
Described by the Irish Times as “An institution in Dublin for thirty years”, Tom Mathews (born 1952) is well over four feet tall. His Cupid`s bow legs and long flaming red nose have made him a legend from one end of Ireland to slightly beyond the same end.
When not drinking stout and boring everyone to tears about Groucho Marx and James Joyce, he is busy at his easel or desk.
“Achievements” to date include:
“Levon”: A novel, 1984
Three collections of cartoons
Criticism (Theatre, Books, Rock music)
Thirty one man exhibitions (cartoons)
Two serious exhibitions
Tom has exhibited at the Living Art Exhibition, National Portrait Show, RHA.
His book “Keats and Chapman” (a collection of improbable tales) was published by New Island Books in October 2008. His collected verse was published in 2009.
His Artoons appear every Saturday in the Irish Times.
Annie West (born 1961) spent ten years working in film and TV. She worked in RTE, Tyne Tees TV, Little Bird Films, Channel Four, BBC, Strongbow Films, and Palace Pictures until, in 1998, she began her career as a full time Illustrator and cartoonist.
She is neither tall nor willowy.
Annie has illustrated over a dozen children`s books, two of which she also Authored, and has designed album covers for The Waterboys, Sharon Shannon and many more.
Well known in Literary circles as the “Person responsible for Those Yeats Cartoons”, Annie has been exhibiting her Limited Edition Fine Art prints since 2006. She has had several sold out solo shows in Sligo, Dublin and Galway. She has the dubious qualification of having made a man die laughing at one of her Yeats cartoons.
Annie also works to commission and an Annie West Special is fast becoming a prized possession among discerning art lovers. Her hilarious, smart yet decidedly affordable one-off illustrations are in great demand and her commissioned work can be found in the collections of Brad Pitt, Mick Galwey, Former U.S. Ambassador Tom Foley, The Waterboys, Paul Carson, Horslips, Sharon Shannon, Michael D. Higgins, Neil Jordan, Anthony Foley, Shane Byrne, Senator David Norris and Tom Cruise among many others.
Prepare to be amused.

London, 22 April 2010- Rosie Boycott is the latest high-profile woman to join the Women’s Food and Farming Union London Branch. As London Mayor Boris Johnson’s official “Food Guru,” Rosie is the brains behind the city’s Capital Growthproject, which launched last year to boost food growing spaces in urban environments.
Addressing the WFU’s London Branch members at an event in central London, Boycott stated, “There is a logical synergy between London’s Capital Growth programme and the WFU’s London Branch and I’m eager to explore what we might achieve together. The WFU has always been a vital link between the British farmer and I’m thrilled that we can now draw upon each other’s knowledge and support.”
Sarah Chase, Chairwoman of the WFU’s London Branch stated, “Rosie Boycott understands both the magic and mystery behind the food industry. We are very fortunate to count her among our members, as she’s the kind of woman who has dirt under her nails, literally. Rosie’s Capital Growth project is an example of how our members can contribute to local, grow-your-own projects as we work to bridge the rural to urban divide and educate those in urban areas, especially children, about how their food is grown.”
Lady Sara Apsley, spokeswoman for the WFU’s London branch noted, “Providing British families in both urban and rural areas with the resources necessary to share and learn about farming, where food comes from and why the rural world is so integral to all our lives is an absolute necessity if we are to move forward into a more sustainable world.”
PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR THE LONDON BRANCH WEB SITE & MORE INFORMATION
To officially launch the “Look Local” campaign for the WFU’s London Branch, Lady Sara Apsley and Jackie Llewelyn-Bowen will be “Cooking It Up for the Press” on 18 May. This is an invitation-only event in central London. Lady Apsley and Jackie Llewelyn-Bowen will be bringing produce from the Cirencester’s Farmers Market to London, cooking a delicious feast and then serving up food and features for select press! There are a limited number of “meal tickets” available. For information, and to enquire about securing a ticket, please e-mail: sarah@wfulondon.org.uk

Secretary: Sally Scantlebury (secretary@wfulondon.org.uk)
1.There are more than 20+ branches of the WFU across the whole of England, Scotland and Wales. The London branch is one of several launching this year and Lady Sara Apsley has been named the branch’s official spokeswoman.
2.London is strategically situated to the circles of political power and mass media outlets.
3.London epitomizes the “rural-to-urban” divide and is, therefore, crucial as both a geographic and demographic area.
4.London’s inner-city schools, children and families have been an under-served demographic and the WFU is dedicated to educating those in the inner city as to the importance of looking local for British produce … as well as the sources of food and the broader, long term implications good, fresh food has on human health.
5.The WFU London Branch is open to all women (and men!) who share a passionate concern for farming, the country, food sustainability, quality & local produce as well as the promotion and protection of time-honoured rural ways and traditions.
6. The WFU London Branch is committed to exhausting all forms of media and social- networking opportunities in order to help promote the key goals and messages of the WFU.

Munster face what will be one of their fiercest challenges at Galway’s Sportsground on Sunday.
Added to the traditional rivalry, there’s a huge amount at stake for both sides. Connacht are within touching distance of a place in next season’s Heineken Cup while Munster are now in a dogfight for qualification to the knock out stages. This is their third last game and arguably their toughest, with a home game against high flying Ospreys and then an away trip to Cardiff.
Team manager Shaun Payne put the task in context saying, “There’s three games left in the competition We can’t afford to be dropping any points at this stage. It’s Connacht at The Sportsground. Every year it’s a very close game and obviously we came a cropper last year.
Looking at Connacht current good heath he continued, “If you look at their recent form, I think they’ve been outstanding. The best I’ve seen them play since I’ve been here (in Ireland). I thought they were excellent against Leinster away and deserved to win that game. They did brilliantly to come through last weekend. They’re playing really very very well at the minute. The Sprtsground ? That’s never ever an easy place to get a result. This is a huge task.”
Speaking about the Munster selection Payne said. ” We won the game last weekend so we’ve a semi final coming up and whatever happens after that. There are vital League games to follow this one and obviously with a a challenge like this, the temptation is to pick your frontline team. But we have to take cognisance of what lies ahead and plan accordingly.
“This is a vital game. Every single game at this stage of the competition is a vital game. But this one first and it is a question of balancing the books.
One thing for certain is that Munster will not be travelling to make up the numbers and what the newcomers bring to the party besides youthful enthusiasm is pace. Barnes and Zebo are lightning quick and Cusack is an out-half in the traditional mould, big and strong with a massive boot.
Deasy is no slouch either while Gleeson adds steel to a backline that will be marshalled by Warwick and Stringer, two of the best in the business,.
Up front Dave Ryan deputises for Marcus Horan and Billy Holland who has yet to play a poor game in the Munster shirt partnering Mick O’Driscoll who is enjoying another wonderful season in the autumn of his career.
Munster: Scott Deasy; Danny Barnes, Tom Gleeson, Paul Warwick, Simon Zebo; Declan Cusack, Peter Stringer; Dave Ryan, Damien Varley, Tony Buckley; Mick O’Driscoll capt; Billy Holland; Nick Williams, Niall Ronan, James Coughlan. Replacements: Denis Fogarty, Julien Brugnaut, Dave Foley, Peter O’Mahoney, Conor Murray, Jeremy Manning, Sean Scanlon.
Connacht: Gavin Duffy, Troy Nathan, Niva Ta’auso, Keith Matthews, Fionn Car, Ian Keatley, Frank Murphy, Brett Wilkinson, Sean Cronin, Jamie Hagan, Michael Swift, Bernie Upton, John Muldoon capt., Johnny O’Connor, George Naoupu Replacements: Adrian Flavin, Ronan Loughney, Michael McCarthy, Mike McComish, Conor O’Loughlin, Miah Nikora, Aidan Wynne.

While the Munster pack has a familiar ring to it there are three of the backline who will be making their senior competitive debut on Sunday in the crucial Magners League game against Connacht at The Sportsground.
Under 20 international wings Simon Zebo and Danny Barnes and Thomond’s Declan Cusack are named in the side that will be led by Mick O’Driscoll for the trip to Galway.
The opportunity presents itself because of the injury situation among the backs in the Munster squad that sees Denis Hurley, Doug Howlett, Ian Dowling, Keith Earls Jean de Villiers and Barry Murphy all nursing injuries of varying degrees but in pre season and British & Cup games the backline trio have shown what they’re capable of and Sunday’s step up is well within their capabilities.
Zebo was a regular on this year’s internations 20s Championship winning side while Barnes was called into the U20s squad last summer for the World Cup in Japan as was replacement scrum-half for Sunday, Conor Murray.
Declan Cusack has been director of operations on Anthony Foley’s Britist & Irish Cup side playing a crucial part in their march to the semi-final.
Paul Warwick and Peter Stringer provide the wily presence in the backs, with Warwick at inside centre alongside Tom Gleeson and Scott Deasy at full-back.
Munster: Scott Deasy; Simon Zebo, Tom Gleeson, Paul Warwick, Danny Barnes; Declan Cusack, Peter Stringer; Dave Ryan, Damien Varley, Tony Buckley; Mick O’Driscoll capt; Billy Holland; Nick Williams, Niall Ronan, James Coughlan. Replacements: Denis Fogarty, Julien Brugnaut, Dave Foley, Peter O’Mahoney, Conor Murray, Jeremy Manning, Sean Scanlon.

Southern Records are very proud to have reached the triumphant milestone of 160. Yes, that’s right – one hundred and sixty releases on the Southern imprint. Not bad for a label in its 18th year. And we couldn’t be happier than for that milestone to be marked by the release of an album by someone Southern first collaborated with well before the label was started. It was way back in 1981 that we first worked with the girl from New York who had followed Crass back to their house in Epping, for the release of her Barbed Wire Halo single on Crass Records. None other than Miss Annie Anxiety, aka Annie Bandez, aka Little Annie.
Little Annie and Paul Wallfisch Genderful
Annie’s latest work is Genderful, her second album with her piano muse, and co-conspirator, composer Paul Wallfisch. The duo somehow manage to perfectly mix soul songs and chansons, bluesy saloon singing and European cabaret styling into a gorgeous, new amalgam. It is being released on Southern at the end of May.
In Mojo magazine’s review of the album they call Annie “the female counterpart to the Lou Reed of 1982’s Blue Mask – a voice full of pickled New York wisdom”. And we’re not going to argue! Genderful is a true New York blues album – even if Annie and Paul play around with the musical form (a bit of camp show-tune here, a dash of Bowery chanson there) – certainly in spirit. From the opening lines “Give me your tired, give me your poor” (a nod to the sonnet by Emma Lazarus engraved on the inside of the Statue of Liberty), through “Billy Martin Requiem” (a paean to the late, great, Yankees manager), the barbed salute to cookie-cutter urbanites in “Cutesy Bootsies”, and the tender tributes to the lost street characters of “Carried Away” and Adrianna”… it’s an album that has the salty sewers and half-empty bottles of champagne of New York running through its veins. Totally original, there is truly no one like Annie around!
If that was not news enough, we are proud to announce Annie as special support for Marc Almond’s forthcoming 30 Year Celebration – My Hits And A Sides tour. Annie and Paul will be performing a special set with Baby Dee. The first dates are as follows – more will be announced in the coming weeks.
